Hemodiafiltration is a medical procedure that helps remove waste products and excess fluids from your blood when your kidneys are not working properly.

  1. We use a special machine called a dialyzer, which is connected to your bloodstream through a small tube. Your blood flows through this tube and into the dialyzer. Inside the dialyzer, there are tiny filters that act like a sieve. These filters help separate waste products and extra fluids from your blood. At the same time, a special solution called dialysate is used. This fluid helps to draw out additional waste and fluid from your blood.
    • Hemodiafiltration combines three processes: diffusion, convection, and ultrafiltration.
    • Diffusion: This is like a natural movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. In HDF, it helps remove waste from your blood.
    • Convection: This is like a flowing stream that carries away particles. The dialysate helps create a flow that carries away even more waste and fluid.
    • Ultrafiltration: This is the controlled removal of excess fluid. It helps maintain the right balance of fluids in your body.
  2. Benefits:
    • Hemodiafiltration is often considered more effective in removing larger toxins and providing better clearance of certain substances compared to traditional hemodialysis.
